Dreams and their meaning

Everyone dreams, but not everyone is always aware of their dreams. A bit of awareness often creates more interest in a dream and its meaning. A dream is a collection of images, sounds, thoughts and feelings that come together while you sleep. Dreams are often about things that concern you and are formed by expectations that you create. This contributes to the fact that dreams feel natural and can touch you. You sleep in different phases at night, and they are all unique. One of these is REM sleep, also called dream sleep.

REM sleep is dream sleep

Every night, you go through several different sleep stages. The first phase of sleep lasts only three to five minutes on average and is a transition phase between waking and sleeping states. You probably recognize it; you feel a shock, and, for example, you think you are falling. This sleep convulsion can occur in this first phase of sleep. In the second stage of sleep, you sleep more deeply and then enter a profound sleep; stages three and four are often taken together. After phase four, you enter the stage of REM sleep. Dreams mainly occur during REM sleep, which is also called dream sleep. In general, the dreams last between 5 and 10 minutes. As the night progresses, the REM sleep phases become longer and longer. Every person dreams, even if you can't remember it.

On average, we dream for about one and a half to two hours every night, experiencing five to seven dreams. This frequency underscores the importance of dreams in our lives and their potential to provide valuable insights, often revealing aspects of our subconscious that we may not be aware of in our waking lives.

The Meaning of Dreams

Questions like 'What is a dream?' and 'What is it for?', questions about a dream and the meaning of the dream, come up a lot. Research shows that dreams are often a processing moment during the day; people frequently dream about experiences of the day in a simple and unambiguous way. The events pass by as if in a kind of movie. In a dream, there is always one thing that you focus your attention on because thinking in a dream cannot be more complicated than that. The brain works differently at night, so it would be undeniable to get the best ideas during your dreams. Past and present come together in a dream, allowing you to make connections you never thought of during the day. During a dream, distance often disappears, people can change into other people, and it is even possible to fly. Every dream contains a storyline. Every action appearing in a dream takes the same time as during the day. Distances do fade, creating speed in a dream, which gives the feeling that a dream is flying by in a flash.

Lucid dreams

It may happen that you know you are dreaming during dream sleep or REM sleep. This is also called a lucid dream. Lucid dreams are actually dreams in which you know that you are dreaming. You realize that you are sleeping in bed but that everything around you is a dream. And yet you continue to dream. A lucid dream feels lifelike as if you are awake and walking through your dream. Lucid dreaming is simply dreaming with dream consciousness, so you are aware that you are dreaming while you are dreaming. Would you also like to know more about your dreams and their meaning?
