Book Of The Month

Every month, I choose a book that inspires me.

My first book of the Month in 2026 is:

The Reality of ESP: A Physicist's Proof of Psychic Abilities" by Russell Targ.

Remote Viewing

On February 4, 1974, members of the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped nineteen-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst from her Berkeley, California apartment.

Desperate to find her, the police contacted physicist Russell Targ and Pat Price, a retired police commissioner and psychic.

As Price turned the pages of the police mug book filled with hundreds of photos, he suddenly pointed to one and announced, "That's the ringleader."

The man was Donald DeFreeze, who was indeed subsequently so identified.

Price also described the type and location of the kidnap car, enabling the police to find it within minutes.

That remarkable event is one reason Targ believes in ESP.

Another occurred when his group earned $120,000 by forecasting, over nine consecutive weeks, changes in the silver futures market.

As a scientist, Targ demands proof.

His experience is based on two decades of investigations at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), which he cofounded with physicist Harold Puthoff in 1972.

The CIA, NASA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the Army and Air Force Intelligence supported this twenty-million-dollar program launched during the Cold War.

The results they routinely obtained from their experiments could have occurred by chance less than once in a million. Targ describes four types of experiments:

  1. Remote Viewing, in which a person describes places and events independent of space and time. For example, while in California, Price drew to scale a Soviet weapons factory at Semipalatinsk with great accuracy, later confirmed by Satellite photography. In another remote viewing, Targ accurately sketched an airport in San Andreas, Colombia.
  2. Distant Mental Influence, where the thoughts of the experimenter can positively or negatively affect the physiology (heart rate, skin resistance, etc.) of a distant person.
  3. Whole field isolation, where someone in a state of sensory isolation accurately describes the visual experiences of someone else in another place
  4. Precognition and retrocausality, showing that the future can affect the past. That is, the elephant you see on television in the morning may be the cause of your dreaming about elephants the previous night.

The final chapters present evidence for survival after death; explain how ESP works, based on the Buddhist/Hindu view of ourselves as nonlocal, eternal awareness; discuss the ethics of exercising psychic abilities; and show how to explore ESP ourselves.

"I am convinced," Targ says, "that most people can learn to move from their ordinary mind to one not obstructed by conventional barriers of space and time. Who would not want to try that?"

More Examples of Remote Viewing

1. Ingo Swann's Viewing of Planet Jupiter

One of the most striking cases comes from Ingo Swann, a pioneer in remote viewing who worked closely with researchers at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). In 1973, Swann was asked to 'view' Jupiter before the Pioneer 10 probe reached the planet. He described rings around the earth, which was considered impossible at the time—astronomers thought only Saturn had rings. Later, the probe confirmed the presence of rings. This is a classic example of how remote viewing can provide foresight into unknown locations in space.

2. Pat Price's Description of a Soviet Base

During the Stargate Project (a CIA program in the 1970s and 1980s), remote viewer Pat Price demonstrated remarkable accuracy. In a 1974 experiment, he was given coordinates of a secret Soviet facility in Semipalatinsk (now in Kazakhstan). Without prior knowledge, he sketched details such as buildings, a crane, and underground storage spaces for nuclear weapons. Later, satellite imagery confirmed that his descriptions were largely accurate, including details of equipment that was not publicly known. This case illustrates the potential military utility of remote viewing.

3. Joe McMoneagle's Detection of a Soviet Submarine

Joe McMoneagle, a former army officer and one of the most successful remote viewers in the Stargate Project, had multiple hits. In 1979, he was tasked with locating a new Soviet submarine. He not only described the location (a shipyard in Severodvinsk) but also provided unique details, such as a double hull and specific dimensions. Weeks later, satellite photos confirmed his viewing, including the unusual construction. McMoneagle has also helped locate missing persons and objects, demonstrating the practical applications of remote viewing.

4. Modern Applications in Missing Persons Cases

More recently, there have been examples of remote viewing in cold cases. For instance, researcher Stephan Schwartz used remote viewers to locate archaeological sites, such as a sunken ship from antiquity. In an experiment, viewers located a wreck in the Mediterranean Sea with surprising accuracy. In documentaries and recent interviews, such as with Pam Coronado, cases are discussed in which remote viewing has helped track down missing people through intuitive insights. A new mini-documentary by DMT-Quest (from 2025) examines how altered states and remote viewing are used to locate missing persons, featuring interviews with experts.

My own experience with Remote Viewing

At present, I am writing a book about my remote viewing experiences, focusing on historical and contemporary events. Sometimes I see things in great detail that are entirely different from what I learned in school or what I saw in mainstream media.

During readings, I often use remote viewing. When people want to move house, I see myself standing inside their new home - the home that is not yet in their reality. The same applies to future partners, children, and career.
